The new edition further develops the proven environmental management system in a targeted manner. Requirements become clearer, while environmental performance, current environmental conditions, and transparent decision-making move more strongly into focus.
The revision is not a complete realignment. It further develops the existing system in a targeted way and clarifies the aspects to which organizations will need to pay greater attention in the future.
01-Environmental Context
Climate change, pollution, biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural resources are considered more comprehensively.
02-Leadership
Top management's responsibility for environmental performance and strategic integration becomes more explicit.
03-Risks & Opportunities
Identification, evaluation, and action planning are structured more clearly and linked more effectively.
04-Change Planning
The new section 6.3 requires relevant changes to be systematically prepared and controlled.
05-Life Cycle Perspective
Upstream and downstream impacts, as well as external processes, products, and services, are integrated more precisely.
06-Effectiveness
Demonstrable results, internal audits, and management reviews receive a stronger performance focus.
According to the currently published information, a transition period of 36 months is planned. The final requirements of the responsible accreditation organizations will be binding.

The existing environmental management system remains the foundation. The key is to assess the changes in a structured manner and integrate them into the certification cycle in a timely way.
A transition audit may – depending on the binding requirements – be combined with a surveillance audit or recertification audit.
1. Obtain the new standard text and evaluate the changes
2. Identify affected processes and documented information
3. Implement the necessary adjustments within the system
4. Update the internal audit and management review
5. Coordinate the transition audit with PIAQ at an early stage
